Organize a Tenants’ Union!

Welcome, Neighbor-

If you and your fellow tenants are ready to come together and stand up for your rights, we support you! While ACDC can’t be directly involved in organizing tenants’ unions for properties that it has not acquired, this toolkit provides guidance and links to help you build tenant power in your building, neighborhood, or across Aurora and surrounding counties.

What is a Tenants’ Union?

A tenants’ union is a group of renters who work collectively to improve housing conditions, address unfair practices, and advocate for change with landlords, property managers, or policymakers. Together, you have more leverage than any one tenant does alone.

Getting Started: Steps to Organize

  1. Talk to Your Neighbors
Start informally. Ask if others are experiencing the same issues. Build trust.

  2. Hold a First Meeting
Choose a neutral location or meet virtually. Keep the agenda simple: listen, share, connect.

  3. Identify Common Issues
Are you dealing with rising rents, poor maintenance, or unfair fees? Prioritize shared concerns.

  4. Form a Committee
Even a few people can begin outreach, communication, and planning future meetings.

  5. Know Your Rights
Colorado law protects your right to organize. Anti-retaliation laws prevent landlords from punishing you for union activity.

  6. Set Goals and Strategy
Start small (e.g., demand repairs) or plan longer-term efforts (e.g., rent negotiations).
